What does Valentine's Day mean to you? Does it mean celebrating a special anniversary with your partner by going out for a romantic dinner? Does it mean waiting to get lots of cards from several admirers? Or simply sharing expressions of affection between your family and friends?

For the team at Devika Care Company, it is important for us to help people with our Valentine's Day meaning. For us, it's all about Valentine's Day is all about showing love and appreciation to those who matter most, which is why it's so important to understand how to show affection to your loved one with Dementia.

1 - The gift of memories

Try sharing some memories through photos, music or stories. It's a great way to connect with your loved one and show them how much you care. We recently played old videos to a resident that used to perform on stage as a singer, of him singing with his band. Not only did the song itself bring a smile to his face, but he also started to discuss old stories of the band members and the antics they would get upto - it was wonderful!

2 - The gift of human touch

This Valentine's Day, try sharing your love through touch. Hugs, massages, or simply holding their hand can go a long way in making your loved one living with dementia feel special and cared for. If you find a specific method that your loved one responds to most, make sure you share this with the staff so that they can continue to care for your loved one in a way that suits them after you leave.

3 - The gift of giving

If you have a loved one with Dementia, why not bring them a special treat this Valentine's? A teddy bear (our residents love our HUG™ sensory cuddly companion), a cake, or even a special scent can brighten up their day and make them feel loved. You can also bring along other loved ones, such as grandchildren or pets, to make the day even more special.

At Devika Care Company, we know how important it is to show affection to your loved one with Dementia all year round.
